A UK Spouse visa lets the husband, wife, or civil partner of a British citizen or settled person join them in the UK. For applicants in Pakistan, the process runs through the UK visa application centre network and is assessed against Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules. Most refusals we see from Lahore applicants come down to two things: the financial requirement and the quality of relationship evidence, not eligibility itself.
The Financial Requirement
The UK-based sponsor (or the couple's joint income, in some categories) must meet a minimum income threshold of £29,000 a year, current as of 2026. This can be met through salaried employment, self-employment, cash savings, or a combination, but the evidence rules under Appendix FM-SE are specific about what counts and how it must be documented. A payslip alone rarely satisfies the requirement; entry clearance officers expect matching bank statements, an employer letter, and often P60s or tax returns covering the full assessment period.
Common mistake: using savings that have only recently appeared in an account. Cash savings generally need to have been held for at least six months before the application, and a sudden large deposit shortly before applying is one of the most common refusal triggers we see.
Proving a Genuine Relationship
Entry clearance officers are trained to look for a consistent, well-documented relationship history, not a single strong piece of evidence. For couples who married in Pakistan, useful evidence includes a valid Nikah Nama or civil marriage certificate, joint financial commitments if any exist, travel history showing time spent together, and communication records spanning a meaningful period, not just the weeks before the application.
Photographs alone rarely carry an application. What matters is a timeline that holds together: how the relationship began, how it has been maintained (especially during any periods apart), and concrete plans for life together in the UK.
English Language Requirement
Applicants from Pakistan must generally provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate at CEFR level A1, from an approved test provider, unless a recognised exemption applies (such as holding a degree taught in English, verified through UK ENIC).
Accommodation
The couple must show they have adequate accommodation available in the UK without recourse to public funds. This is usually evidenced with a tenancy agreement or property ownership document, alongside confirmation from the sponsor about the property's occupancy.
